This blog is designed for individuals to present their ideas about change. In it’s broadest sense, I am interested in how you are embracing change in your life. What does change really mean to you? What are you willing to commit to? You are invited to share your thoughts and actions. The only requirement to presenting your work, is, I ask of you to be decent. The article below was written by myself and asks you to think about these times in a positive light.
“We were made for these times”.
Yet, still I Marvel

As I prepare for the start of another school year I am confronted with memories of past starts and of my childhood lived in the Central area. It was a time when black and white TV showed up on the market, that when practice air raids sirens were heard meant we immediately sprang under our desks and when the Queen of England appeared on our classroom televisions, all other subjects were suspended. It was a time when the worst classroom offense was chewing gum or crowding in line. One could purchase a lunch for just 25 cents and you would be served a very complete entre. Space flight was a new frontier to be explored and competition with Russia meant an academic focus on math and science. Community issues focused on the dismantling of racial segregation. Schools, colleges, the political arena, and the Black aesthetic was focused on the myriad of styles, and expressions. This passion for expression was fused in a people’s total commitment to the fair and just treatment, representation of African-Americans. It was a time sadly when the only female child stars to serve as role models of what one could become were Annette Funicello, and Darlene of the Mickey Mouse Club, and Haley Mills. The fight for total inclusion into the American landscape, replete with dignity of treatment was prominent - to be witnessed in the fight for Civil and Human rights. I was to witness the development of numerous local and national programs demanding that Blacks have access to industry, politics and the academy. I participated - with my entire mind, body and soul in MANY community performing arts groups; The Central Area School of the Performing Arts, Cornish School - where I studied piano, Black Arts West, the Cirque Theater, to name a few. A multitude of opportunities existed for youth to get involved, or you could simply start your own with community support and engagement! Local television stations were always giving air time to youth groups, and one such was Action-Inner City, a part of KOMO TV where myself and others expressed ourselves through the performing arts.
Fast forward to school years of the last several years. We are to witness a turning away from the very light that provides freedom, insight and growth. Many are tuned out and are turning away from participation.
I say to you, do not lose heart. We were made for these times. As Dr. Clarissa Estes, states in her recent writing: Let Your Soul Light Shine Bright, “ours is a time of almost daily astonishment and often righteous rage over the latest degradation of what matters most to civilized and visionary people.
Yes. For years, we have been learning, practicing, been in training for and just waiting to meet on this exact plain of engagement. In times of darkness we tend to focus on how much is wrong, unmended”.
Can we not discern how much progress has been made by focused energy, walking towards the light?
Yet, still I marvel at the knowledge of African Americans, who once rode on the back of a bus, now ride on the FRONT of the space shuttle. I am overwhelmed by joy in the knowledge that there exists so many opportunities to serve, and to know that we are needed, that we can make a dent. It just delights me, to know that, like in another era, through the accumulated acts of people, change happened. Witness the technological revolution. We are able to send and receive information simultaneously from the furtherest reaches of the planet. Voices of despair and discouragement do not find a place at my alter, although, I experience the darkness of abuse towards children and everyday people.
I still marvel at the knowledge that a believer’s voice means that I listen to a greater voice, and that to ask for grace means to contribute to serve, to love - after all, look how far we’ve come, by faith, action, and taking little steps towards the accumulated good.
